Open fractures are those in which the soft tissues and skin are disrupted, and the bone has been exposed to the environment. These injuries are common in the extremities during childhood, due to exploration or bad risk assessment. Initial treatment should include antibiotic prophylaxis, wound debridement, and stabilization, as needed for every specific case. Bone healing and soft tissue reparation process are better in adult patients, but sequelae may still exist if adequate treatment is not carried out. We must always exclude compartment syndrome since this will have catastrophic consequences for the patient.
