The 2024 European Parliament Election as Second-Order Election: An Analysis of the Election Results in All EU Member States

This article analyses the 2024 European Parliament election as second-order election with regard to voter turnout, the proportion of invalid votes, and the election results in all 27 member states. The tenth direct election of the European Parliament as well clearly exhibited characteristics of a second-order election: Compared to the respective previous national first-order election, voter turnout was lower in most EU states while the proportion of invalid votes was higher. In addition, the governing parties had to record lower vote shares almost everywhere, while smaller and new parties achieved gains.
