This chapter examines the prominence of the European Union in national election campaigns in Poland and the Netherlands in late 2023, leading up to the tenth European Parliament elections in June 2024. Traditionally regarded as ‘second-order’ elections, characterised by lower voter engagement, the increasing Europeanisation of national politics necessitates an assessment of how political parties integrate EU issues into their domestic campaigns. Focusing on climate action, migration, and defence, this study analyses the manifestos, televised debates, and Instagram posts of 13 political parties that are active in both national and EP elections. A total of 38 EU-related mentions were identified—26 from Dutch campaigns and 12 from Polish campaigns. Notably, 21% of these references explicitly criticise EU policies, predominantly from Eurosceptic parties, while most mentions are either positive or neutral. Despite the significant impact of the EU, its salience in national campaigns remains minimal and inconsistent. Political parties have underutilised social media platforms to engage voters on EU-related issues, missing valuable opportunities to connect with younger demographics. This underrepresentation may affect post-election dynamics and the upcoming EP elections, potentially undermining constituent support for critical EU initiatives. The study underscores the need for political parties to more prominently feature EU affairs in national political discourse.

摘要
