Final Thoughts on Forest Harvest Scheduling

Several of the forest harvest scheduling methods described in this book have been used in practice to assist in the development of forest plans. All of the forest harvest scheduling methods described in this book have been used to explore the impact of potential policy options on the management of forests. The choice of method to employ is a function of the perceived amount of time, data, and human capital available to apply to the effort. Right or wrong, there are times when the expert within an organization has simply convinced the decision-maker(s) of the appropriate method to employ. If optimality is desired, the range of harvest scheduling methods to employ may be limited. If the speed of computing is deemed important, again the range of scheduling methods to employ may be limited. Therefore, the choice of a forest harvest scheduling method is important since the processes employed and the quality and timeliness of outcomes that they produce may vary.
