This chapter gives a historical overview of magnetic computing ideas. We skim the ideas behind domain tip propagation logic, magnetic amplifiers, magnetic parametrons, and magnetostatic wave devices. Magnetic computing never became a mainstream computing technology, but even in the past and for long periods of time it was viewed by many as a viable alternative for electronic signal processing. This historical perspective also contributes to understanding the benefits of spin-based computing and where it could successfully compete with electronic devices—much of the arguments related to robustness, radiation hardness, and nonvolatilty are just as valid today as they were 50 years ago.
