AI and Sustainability: Can the Fourth Revolution Usher in a New Reality?
摘要
Artificial intelligence (AI) can perform a wide range of tasks, including generating and altering our reality. However, broad use and technological breakthroughs raise concerns about sustainability over the long term. It should be mentioned that in the AI literature, AI for sustainability and sustainability of AI are recognized as separate genres under the umbrella term sustainable AI. AI for sustainability is concerned with using AI to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to transform our world. In a nutshell, AI for sustainability is concerned with the application of AI. We can see AI is becoming the most sought-after technology in the fourth revolution. At the same time, we can find that the more it is being employed, the more questions regarding its sustainability will surface. Moreover, we will see that AI and sustainability have a contradictory relationship. The paradox is that the deployment of AI ushers in new realities that will have serious consequences for the environment and the economy. The further we go toward sustainability, the more we are involved in the conundrum. Therefore, this quandary must be addressed from the perspective of a new reality. The question is: How do we get out of this? This is the central question of this chapter. This chapter examines journals and other publications on the debate using a qualitative approach to social science. I have analyzed and critically revisited the research already conducted in this area and tried to explain the problem.
