Its breakthroughs in vertical takeoff and landing hinted at a future where rockets could function more like aircraft. Around the same time, Rotary Rocket Company introduced the Roton “space helicopter,” another novel concept for reusable launch. Though its rotor-based landing system was never fully tested, Roton’s ambition sparked valuable discussions about cutting-edge rocket design. The chapter concludes with Kistler Aerospace’s K-1, a fully reusable, two-stage rocket that garnered significant attention but struggled under the weight of funding obstacles and changing market conditions.
