When assessing the wound, questions about how, when, and where the injury occurred are very important, as the mechanism of injury, the time elapsed after the injury, and the contamination and cleanliness of the injury environment (industry, agriculture, etc.) provide important information in terms of treatment planning, the severity of the injury, contamination, and risk of infection of the wound. In general, although microorganisms are present in every wound, infection is not observed in every wound. The development of infection in traumatic wounds depends on many local and patient-related factors. The first step of treatment is wound cleansing and debridement, and prophylactic antibiotic use before surgery is also known to reduce the risk. There are plans to review the causes and control of infection in post-traumatic extremity injuries.
