This chapter explores the British military and state response to the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745–46 (the Forty-Five). Investigating a range of personal experiences, it considers the broader cultural frameworks, personal attitudes, and experiences that shaped officers’ actions during it. The military response to the rebellion was characterised by two distinct approaches: military execution and moderation. Examining both approaches during the rebellion and the pacification that followed it demonstrates the varied British response to the Jacobite threat. In the long-term, the British state implemented militarisation strategy in the Highlands as it sought to prevent renewed rebellion and to inculcate loyalty within that population through their assimilation into the British Empire. By the 1760s, Highlanders had not been fully assimilated, yet they were displaying submission and adherence to the state in a way that suggested new possibilities for imperial subjecthood.
