The critical determinant of asbestos-related disease is the quantity of fibers deposited and retained in the lungs. In evaluating the risk for asbestos-related diseases in an exposed individual, the provision of an accurate level of exposure in fiber/cm3-years is problematic. Subsequently, the most frequent approach in the assessment of an individual worker’s exposure is by simply listing the jobs worked. This can include industries in which the worker was employed and his/her occupations. Occupational exposures specific to jobs are reviewed. Environmental exposures including background exposures, those in public buildings and neighborhoods, and paraoccupational exposures can occur. The regulatory response by the government has greatly restricted asbestos exposure.
