Effects of Rural Domestic Reclaimed Water Irrigation on Heavy Metals Changes in Soil-Crop System

Reclaimed water reuse is a topic of growing interest in the field of reclaimed water management. This study took the paddy, seedling, vegetable fields in south China as the research object, aimed at the safety of irrigation regulation of reclaimed water, and was based on the field experiment, to research the effect of paddy irrigation regulation (low water level W1, medium water level W2 and high water level W3) and vegetable、seedling conventional irrigation of different water sources (rural domestic sewage primary treatment water R1, secondary treatment water R2, ecological pond purified water R3 and river water CK/R4) on the content of typical heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Cr, Cu, Zn) in soil and crop. The study examines the levels of typical, harmful heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Cr, Cu, Zn) in soil and crops. Our results show that the concentration of heavy metals in the rice plant’s stem is greater than that of the grains and leaves, with Zn being the highest concentration, followed by Cr, Pb, and Cd to decrease concentration. Compared to the irrigation water source, it was also observed that the concentration of harmful elements in the grains did not show a significant rise when using recycled water for irrigation. In order to adhere to the specified limits on impurities found in rice grains, it is essential to follow strict guidelines. As for the germination of seeds, it is crucial to ensure compliance with the established standards. For seedlings, Cd and Cu content increased in the 20 cm soil layer. For vegetable planting, Cd and Pb content increased in the 20 cm soil layer, 40 cm soil layer, and 60 cm soil layer. Overall, the fluctuations in heavy metal levels in soils irrigated by R3 and CK/R4 water sources are largely similar. In general, the use of reclaimed water for irrigation did not result in significant contamination of agricultural fields. However, the potential for a sustained increase in the risk of heavy metal pollution due to long-term reclaimed water irrigation requires further investigation.
