Green Biomedical Waste Management

As global healthcare expands, the need for ecologically sound and affordable biomedical waste management practices becomes more critical. Infectious, toxic, and radioactive waste from healthcare facilities, laboratories, and research centers poses significant health and environmental threats. This chapter focuses on green biomedical waste management systems prioritizing public health and resource conservation. The chapter focuses on novel recovery approaches that improve overall efficiency by optimizing trash segregation, reducing cross-contamination, and reducing waste. Smart waste bins, anaerobic reactors equipped with nano-sensors, DFT, and Internet of Things (IoT) technology are proposed to simplify waste separation and classification. This chapter investigates the possibility of bio-based packaging materials to replace conventional plastics, lowering carbon footprint and fostering a circular economy. Implementing decentralized systems allows waste segregation at source, reducing the potential for cross-contamination and permitting safer handling. On-site waste elimination methods, such as autoclaving, microwaving, and chemical disinfection, are being investigated as viable alternatives to incineration to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and harmful byproducts. Case studies on the effective implementation of these green biomedical waste procedures in developing countries such as India are investigated, illustrating the economic viability and environmental benefits of adopting ethical waste disposal procedures to produce energy storage gadgets. This chapter also examines the legal and regulatory framework for handling biological debris in various places, as inappropriate pharmaceutical disposal can lead to pathogen multiplication, culminating in disease epidemics and biodiversity contamination. This chapter highlights the emerging scientific technologies and their integration into medical waste management in recent years. This chapter discusses an innovative approach to hospital waste management based on the 3R concept, which encourages “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.” The challenges of biological trash recycling and the importance of sustainable practices in the healthcare sector are discussed.
