Strategies for Bio-medical Waste Management: A Comprehensive Approach

With India’s rapidly increasing population, there is a growing concern about the impact of severe diseases and the generation of hazardous biomedical waste. Improper disposal of this waste can have adverse effects on the environment and public health, making proper implementation of biomedical waste management practices crucial. Biomedical waste includes infectious materials from labs, medical treatments, and surgical procedures. Improper accumulation of these wastes in open dumping grounds and landfills can expose individuals to diseases and pose risks to workers. Additionally, these wastes contribute to global warming through the release of toxic gases, further exacerbating environmental issues. To address these challenges, the Central Pollution Control Board Guidelines 2020, provided regulations for biomedical waste management, along with proposed amendments. The guidelines emphasize on the categorization of waste through colour codes and the implementation of proper segregation, collection, storage, transportation, treatment, and disposal processes. Proper disposal methods should be implemented by hospitals and medical services at various levels, involving both private and government authorities. Strict monitoring of waste management, from collection to disposal, is necessary to protect the environment and the health of living beings. This requires raising awareness and providing information about biomedical waste management to all the stakeholders. To safeguard the environment and its precious resources, we should adopt effective waste management strategies. This will help to protect individuals from various diseases caused by exposure to hazardous waste and in mitigating the contribution of biomedical waste to global warming. Ultimately, the proper management of biomedical waste is essential for a sustainable and healthier future for India’s ever-growing population.
