Scope of Energy Recovery from Plastic Waste in India Through Pyrolysis Technology

India, the face of the developing countries across the world is also the second largest producer of plastic waste. India generates around 3.4 million tonnes (MT) of plastic waste, annually among which nearly 30 percent is recycled properly. Despite the government has been taken several initiatives with an amendment of plastic waste management rules (2021) and a numerous waste management companies are working to combat plastic waste pollution, still the goal is far away to achieve. In this scenario, along with the recycling of plastic waste, an alternative should be emerged to beat plastic pollution. India is still in search of a concrete data inventory of plastic waste generation and disposal. Non-recyclable plastic waste management and an unequal scope of the circularity of recyclable plastic waste through the recycling industries are major challenges faced in the country. In this situation, pyrolysis could be a tangible alternative to the landfill problem for plastic waste management. This chapter will be dedicated to the understanding of pyrolysis, conventional to catalytic pyrolysis and an effect of different types of catalyst in pyrolysis of plastic waste. Moreover, microwave pyrolysis, the new generation technology, for value-added product recovery will be elaborate in detail. This chapter will also highlight the cost–benefit aspect of this technology and a green investment scope of the corporate sectors at here to achieve a more efficient environmental, social, and governance rating and sustainability.
