The maritime space in Africa contributes significantly to Africa’s path to sustainable development through the abundance of natural resources in this maritime space and through economic relations with the world. However, despite its importance, Africa’s maritime space has been riddled with myriad challenges, leading to the call at all levels of governance for the need to pursue robust and sustainable maritime security governance practices needed to harness the potential of Africa’s maritime space. As various African states have continued to pursue sustainable maritime security governance singlehandedly, the role of multilateral institutions such as the African Union cannot be underestimated. From the African Maritime Transport Charter of 2009 to the African International Maritime (AIM) Strategy 2050 and the 2016 Maritime Safety Charter in Lomé in 2016, the African Union has continued to identify Africa’s maritime space as an essential economic tool that can transform the continent and contribute to AU-Agenda 2063. It is within this premise that the chapter focuses on interrogating the role of the African Union (A.U.) in sustainable maritime security governance in Africa. The chapter thoroughly assesses the African Union’s maritime initiatives and strategies to understand multilateral perspectives on maritime security governance in Africa.
