The European Union and NATO vis-a-vis Maritime Security
摘要
In this chapter, it is explored how NATO and EU cooperate in the maritime domain, which are their primary common fields of interest, and their main joint initiatives. Building on experience in the Mediterranean Sea and the Horn of Africa, NATO and EU convened to explore further possibilities for mutual logistical support and information sharing between staffs on operational activities, including on irregular migration, when the EU and NATO consider or conduct activities in the same theatres. In addition, they considered further possibilities for maritime cooperation. This is related to all the aspects of the operations, including human rights and gender mainstreaming. Both the EU Maritime Security Strategy (EUMSS) and the NATO Alliance Maritime Strategy will be analysed as a point of departure. Then, the concrete initiatives taken to operationalise such concepts are examined and some final remarks provided.
