Ghana is a coastal state within the Gulf of Guinea and bordered by Togo to the east, Cote d'Ivoire to the west, and Burkina Faso to the north of the country. Ghana is two states away from the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Piracy in the region started upward in 2018, with cases clustering around the waters of Nigeria and stretching to Togo and Ghana waters. This has become a worry for Ghana and its neighboring countries due to its negative impact on maritime trade. Through its Maritime Authority (GMA), the government of Ghana has fronted collaborative efforts by maritime security stakeholders to enforce maritime security in the country and the West African sub-region. Despite the efforts channeled into maritime security enforcement, Ghana and neighboring states record piracy incidents yearly. Among current incidents was a Ghanaian general cargo vessel, AM Delta, boarded on November 16, 2020, by eight pirates armed with assault rifles who stole the ship and crew properties and kidnapped five crew members before escaping. The five crew members kidnapped were released after six (6) weeks. This chapter analyzes the challenges combating the rising piracy and armed robbery incidents in Ghana and its neighboring countries. The chapter also sheds some light on combating piracy and armed robbery in Ghanaian waters and her neighboring countries and proffers measures to address the identified challenges.
