This chapter describes how Nagorno-Karabakh came to the fore due to the Soviet policy of perestroika, the first anti-Armenian pogroms and the first wave of refugees. It discusses how the approval of the Nagorno-Karabakh Constitution (2006) was a defining step in the institutional development of a de facto state, even if not acknowledged by the international community. The chapter examines the events of April 2016 and July 2020, as a prelude to the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War, which marked the first “sign” of the transnationalization of the conflict with the involvement of Syrian mercenaries, up to the 2023 Azerbaijani offensive and the fall of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.
