This chapter details the history, geography and demography of Artsakh from ancient times and old migration waves, including the mith of Musa Dagh Armenian’s origin from Karabakh and its revival in Anjar. Major attention is paid to Shushi, and its development from a town fortress to a cultural centre and place of encounter of the Armenian Church with Shia, Russian Orthodox, and Swiss missionaries, up to the formation of the Armenian Protestant community. We follow the fate of Nagorno-Karabakh from the collapse of the Russian Empire to the Autonomous Region in Soviet Azerbaijan.
