This chapter examines how blockchain technology revolutionises the waste management and recycling sectors. Expanding from this perspective, this chapter utilises a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) to systematically synthesise the current literature and comprehensively categorise applications based on blockchain technology. According to the research, the benefits identified in this area are as follows: increased traceability in the collection and recycling of wastes, fostering decentralised networks for recycling and using smart contracts, and tokenisation for incentive application. Combining it with other burgeoning technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), strengthens the benefits of blockchain technology in waste management by allowing live monitoring and updating and deterministic and responsive optimisation of the management process. However, it has drawbacks in that numerous technological hurdles, lack of legislation, and steep start-up costs must be overcome to apply it on a large scale. Thus, the findings of this study offer numerous practical implications for further research and application by researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to undertake their work, respectively. Blockchain holds the potential for stakeholders to introduce positive change and collaboration and develop environmentally and socially sustainable systems. This chapter emphasises coordinated actions for the elimination of current deficiencies. This underlines the crucial role of blockchain in further developing arrangements for waste management and recycling.
