Enhancing Supply Chain Transparency and Traceability in Waste Management Practices Through Blockchain Technologies and Digital Innovations

The globalization of economies has expanded supply chains into complex, interconnected networks, posing challenges to transparency, traceability, and sustainability. Simultaneously, the dominance of the linear economic model has exacerbated waste management issues, necessitating a transition to circular economy principles. This paper examines the transformative potential of digital technologies—blockchain, the Internet of Things (IoT), and digital product passports (DPPs)—in addressing these challenges. The study highlights how these technologies enhance supply chain visibility, promote ethical sourcing, reduce waste, and enable circular economy practices. Case studies from diverse industries demonstrate the practical applications and benefits of digital innovations, such as real-time monitoring, immutable records, and life cycle tracking of products. However, barriers, including high implementation costs, data silos, and regulatory disparities, impede widespread adoption. To address these challenges, the current study proposes actionable strategies for stakeholders. Industry leaders are encouraged to invest in digital tools and redesign operations to align with circular economy principles. Policymakers are urged to develop standardized frameworks, provide financial incentives, and foster public-private partnerships. Researchers are called to explore interdisciplinary approaches, evaluate scalability solutions, and assess socioeconomic impacts. The findings underscore the synergies between transparency and waste management, advocating for collaborative efforts to build sustainable, resilient, and ethical supply chains. By leveraging digital technologies, stakeholders can overcome implementation barriers, enhance stakeholder collaboration, and contribute to a sustainable future. This paper provides a roadmap for integrating transparency and waste management strategies, aligning global supply chains with sustainability goals.
