Exploring Biodiversity in Wild Edibles for Enhancing Food Security in Saudi Arabia Amidst Climate Change

Environmental degradation is recognized as a serious problem worldwide, and Saudi Arabia is not an exception. The study explores potential uses of Saudi Arabia’s wild edible fruits to improve food security in the context of climate change. The nutritional worth, cultural significance, and climate adaptation of typical wild foods found in Saudi Arabia and their availability are the main focus of the current study. Many wild plants are consumed by local communities in Saudi Arabia, and these types of plants are sometimes undervalued in the broader context of modern-day agriculture. These are wealthy in nutrients in and demand less use of natural assets to thrive. The significance of native plant species that supply a substantial amount of vitamins and nutrients is also emphasized in the current scenario. By using indigenous foods in local dietary habits, one may reduce dependency on foreign food supplies. Significant findings indicate that a range of wild food products, with a substantial amount of essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals, are viable alternatives to standard traditional crops. Additionally, some crops have the potential to resist extreme weather conditions enabling these crops to strategically negate the effects of extreme weather on the food chain. Through increasing knowledge and comprehension of wildlife foraging, Saudi Arabia may encourage nutrient diversity, help boost regional economies, and increase adaptability to food shortages brought about by climate change. By achieving greater ecological objectives and bettering nutritional outcomes, this study promotes an equitable relationship between humankind and its surroundings.
