Following a brief introduction to late nineteenth-century tourism and how some Northerners understood Italy’s racial difference, this chapter highlights the country’s queer sex-tourism industry. Discussing Italy’s appeal to queer men, I explore both the Oxford Movement and the ways in which Italian young men and boys were raced and gendered by their Northern partners. I then take a closer look at accounts of Italy’s queer sex tourism, from newspaper articles to anthropological studies to biographies and memoirs. Two themes I will return to are the circumscribed but visible agency of sex workers and the way in which that perennial tension between congenital and situational understandings of homosexuality fostered a tolerance for male same-sex intimacies.
