In this chapter, after take stock of the evolution of the Canadian economy, we analyze Poilievre’s economic message. He attacks the financial and globalist elite. By suggesting that Justin Trudeau was not affected by a declining purchasing power, he also argued that the Prime minister was unlike ordinary people. Being a member of a privileged elite, Trudeau was said to have no problems paying his bills, like ordinary people do. During his leadership campaign, Poilievre also regularly promoted freedom for bitcoin users, another nod to conspiracy theorists. The Conservative leader exploited growing inflation, using a #Justinflation hashtag online and in the House of Commons to directly attack and define Justin Trudeau. By attacking the economical elites, Poilievre was also courting a unionized electorate and hunting on NDP turf. This marks a major shift in Conservative strategy. To take power under Stephen Harper, the Conservatives needed a strong NDP to split the progressive electorate with the Liberals. Instead, Pierre Poilievre wants to go after NDP votes to overtake the Liberals. Sensing such danger, it will be explained that the NDP tried to protect its base.
