In this chapter, we demonstrate how the Covid pandemic acted as a trigger for an uninhibited populist discourse. Maxime Bernier and Pierre Poilievre were already associated with a more libertarian current of Canadian conservatism. Since the Covid crisis, both men have flirted with conspiracy theories. Bernier assumes this completely, while Poilievre uses more “dog whistle techniques.” In so doing, both targeted the same, more anti-system segment of the electorate. Both have exploited the COVID-19 crisis to mobilize their base. To illustrate these observations, we analyze their rhetoric on social media. At the heart of this new era, we see the emergence of a new criticism of scientists, who are now perceived as the new elite. We also assess the effect of the truckers and understand how the Covid crisis enabled a populist offer to find its market. We finally reflect on the appeal of conspiracy theories and the effect of social media and what this means for the social fabric of Canadian society and political civility.
