This chapter introduces basic quantum principles, with a particular emphasis on the qubit: a two-state quantum system that is the counterpart of the classical bimode. Three fundamental quantum principles are discussed: superposition, which is an inherent part of the linear vector space description; indeterminacy, which underlies uncertainty of measured observables; and entanglement, which refers to quantum states of a composite system for which individual subsystems cannot be described independently.
