Gratitude has emerged as an important positive quality for understanding consequential health outcomes in recent years, including health behaviours. An important yet understudied area within the gratitude and health literature is why gratitude might play an important role in health behaviours. In this chapter we address this gap by proposing that gratitude is linked to resources that can enhance self-regulation and therefore promote the practice of important health behaviours. Drawing on current evidence and theory we suggest that affective states and future time perspective, an orientation towards considering the future when making decisions, are two key self-regulation resources that link gratitude to health behaviours. Although social resources may also play a role, further research is needed. From this perspective, gratitude reflects a strengths-based approach to health behaviour change that can help people successfully navigate the inevitable setbacks and lapses that occur while adopting healthier behaviours.

摘要
