Studies show that the experience of gratitude has a positive impact on psychological well-being, however, research on the relationship between gratitude and physical health is sparse. Preliminary findings suggest gratitude positively affects self-reported physical health as well as underlying physiological mechanisms linked to physical health such as inflammation and cardiovascular functioning. In addition to positively impacting physiological functioning, gratitude may also promote better physical health through its impact on the experience of stress. Research shows that gratitude is associated with lower stress levels and buffers the negative impact of stress on individual’s psychological and physical well-being. Furthermore, gratitude is known to promote greater use of adaptive coping strategies such as positive reframing and social support, which are known to decrease stress. Future research must continue to examine gratitude’s impact on health as well as the psychological and physiology processes through which gratitude impacts physical health and well-being.
