Mindful Eating: A Critical Assessment of the Literature
摘要
Scientific enquiry on mindful eating has exceeded two decades, but defining mindful eating has proven to be quite challenging. The inability to clearly define mindful eating has led to a surplus of descriptions in academic and clinical literature, different psychometric tools, and the development of a field that is lacking the preciseness necessary to advance mindful eating—and the associated interventions—onto a level that is simple to comprehend and implement in practice. Drawing from traditional and contemporary mindfulness and mindful eating literature, this chapter will attempt to define and describe mindful eating in the context of eating behaviors, something that I will be referring to as mindful eating behavior. The review of the literature identifies challenges around (a) the lack of main principles of mindfulness when describing the term of mindful eating, (b) the unclear distinction between mindfulness and mindful eating, (c) the mistaken association between behavior and decision-making within the context of mindful eating, and (d) the association of mindful eating with other constructs such as self-compassion; all of which congest any clarity on the contribution of mindful eating in descriptions and interventions for healthier eating. The potential for future research on mindful eating behavior is detailed as a new beginning in conducting precise research and developing evidence-based practices for clinical and non-clinical use to improve healthy eating.
