The term ‘Romanian Orthodox theology’ and ‘diaspora’ are notions that require hermeneutic clarification. For Orthodoxy, theology cannot be national, even though it may be shaped by cultural contexts; and the term ‘diaspora’ corresponds less and less to the self-understanding of the (Romanian) Orthodox communities in the West. The chapter offers a few preliminary thoughts on the self-positioning of Romanian Orthodox theology and theologians in the Western European context of today. It attempts to look from a systematic-theological perspective at where the identity markers of an Orthodox theology operating in the Western European diaspora can be found, rooted in Romanian culture but articulated in the multicultural and multi-confessional context of Western Europe.
