This introduction chapter provides an overview of what energy poverty is. It also conceptualizes the following terms: low-income households and energy poverty. The chapter also speaks to the approach to the feminisation of poverty, as women have the main responsibility within the household to care for the economy. The triple burden of women within their communities is also discussed. Women have the responsibility to care not just for her home and extended family but also look at the community needs. A quick overview is given of gender and electricity in the community and the impact that energy poverty has on climate change in Jamaica. Energy poverty also speaks to the general impact it has on women as the use of alternative forms of energy affect the daily sustenance of women and their families especially within Jamaica. The chapter also speaks to the challenges that energy has on women and the environment. The approach that was used to collect the data included an explanatory qualitative and quantitative technique, as this was important to describe the existing situation with women and electricity usage, as well as energy use, particularly at home.
