Roberto Burioni’s outspoken defence of science has made him a prominent and polarizing public figure in Italy. Over time, anti-science and anti-vaccine groups have targeted him with online hate, threats, and lawsuits aimed at silencing his public outreach. Yet, despite these challenges, and in the wake of a global pandemic, Burioni remains committed to promoting evidence-based science, continually adapting his approach to meet the demands of the moment. This chapter features a conversation from February 26, 2024, in which we reflect on the evolution of his public engagement. Burioni traces his shift from a more confrontational stance against vaccine misinformation to a moderated, strategic role as scientist-advocate and public communicator, particularly as the pandemic brought him onto a larger national stage.
