This essay distinguishes between twentieth-century Holocene and twenty-first-century Anthropocene activisms, using the Cook Inlet Beluga Whale preservation movement as a case study to illustrate sustainability efforts. A confrontational style was necessary to puncture the hegemonic industrial worldview of the Holocene epoch. The 21st-century communication diffusion movements to resist extinction and restore vitality go other ways. Transforming citizen science into community science, Cook Inlet activism brings whales, scientists, and people together in a vibrant, communicative relationship.
