Primary Course: Interpersonal Communication Secondary Course: Foundations of Human Communication Time: This activity begins by covering the course material on self and identity. You could also use chapter material on interpersonal communication as the basis for this activity. There is a homework assignment that calls for students to do a week’s worth of random acts of kindness outside of the class environment. As part of their homework, they must listen to a specific podcast, reflect on the material, and tie their out-of-class experiences to the material. This podcast was selected because it lays the foundation for the activity. It outlines the role that compassion, kindness, and empathy play in human performance and how individuals benefit from these behaviors. A short period of class time can be dedicated to students sharing their random acts of kindness (about 10–15 minutes) on the day the homework assignment is due. The instructor may want to include more time for sharing since students often comment on and ask questions about each other’s acts of kindness.
