Primary Course: Fundamentals of Communication Secondary Courses: Media Studies and Mass Communication Time: Approximately two weeks Learning Outcomes: Key Terms: Cultural Performance, Communitas, Personal Identity, Social Identity Using an autoethnographic approach to view the sharing of food as a cultural performance, students will research an aspect of their social, familial, or cultural identity through food and storytelling. Each student will then choose a recipe, connected story, and image to contribute to a group recipe book that is representative of the diverse backgrounds and lived experiences of the class. This assignment will guide students to explore the significance that food and storytelling play in cultural identity and community building. While each student’s contribution will be focused on their own cultural identity, the goal of this assignment will be the experience of sharing and coming together as an intercultural group, creating the opportunity for communitas in the classroom through the sharing of food and storytelling.
