This chapter considers the phenomenon of racial segregation within Norwegian schools through the metaphor of “sleepwalking”. It considers historical and contemporary trends that have allowed communities to become secluded along racial lines, echoing fears raised in the UK regarding widespread segregation and its outcomes. The authors argue that Norway is on the brink of creating its own versions of educational “ghettos” as demographic changes remake neighborhoods and schools. Drawing on political discourse and social commentary, this chapter reflects on the anxiety surrounding rising immigrant populations and their perceived threat to societal cohesion. The authors emphasize that smugness in addressing these changes could lead to lasting divisions. They call for an urgent revision of educational practices to create inclusive environments that encourage integration and understanding rather than perpetuating a division based on race. By urging educators and policymakers to confront these realities, the chapter advocates for proactive measures that foster cross-cultural dialogue and develop shared community ties that transcend racial and ethnic lines, paving the way for a more unified society.
