Within the Corinthian correspondence, two broad types of behaviours are identified which Paul promotes among the ekklēsia: spatially non-restrictive behaviours and spatially restrictive behaviours. Spatially non-restrictive behaviours are those behaviours that are not contingent upon the space in which they are to be done. These proper behaviours are to be lived out in one’s daily life, such as how to be married to an unbeliever, how to dine with an unbeliever, or how not to be unequally yoked with an unbeliever. Spatially restrictive behaviours are the behaviours that are required when the believers meet en ekklēsia. This phrase is only found in 1 Cor 11 and 14 in the context of assembly. What are the proper behaviours when the group assembles for worship, or to exact discipline on an errant member (1 Cor 5)? This chapter also discusses the role of women in the Corinthian ekklēsia. To navigate 1 Cor 11 and 14, it will be discussed how women are in-between place: allowed to participate in worship in certain settings but not in others. If these passages are considered through a spatial lens, one finds that they are not contradictory, they are just in different settings.
