Sustainable Energy Transformation: Design of a Municipal Solid Waste Incineration System for Electricity Generation—Energy Efficiency Assessment
摘要
Municipal solid waste (MSW) is a renewable resource with a potential for energy use that is currently dismissed in the Caracas Metropolitan Area (AMC) in Venezuela. In this work, a model of a controlled combustion electric power generation plant from MSW adapted to the city environment is developed. The analysis of the quantity and quality of MSW and the design allows it to propose a plant that generates electricity with an installed capacity of 96 MW and could operate continuously for 24 h a day throughout the year, delivering the generated power to the national electricity grid. The MSW information recovered from the previous literature totalizes an amount equivalent to 1,226,400 tons of waste generated annually throughout the AMC that, according to the energy recovery, the efficiency of the equipment and the characteristics of the solution generate between 771,986.52 and 913,462.87 MWh/year of electrical energy that benefits approximately 200,000 inhabitants of the AMC according to the average consumption pattern proposed by the Venezuelan electric company. The final annual yield of the proposed plant states that the MSW of 19 people will be sufficient for one person to receive sufficient electrical power to meet their electrical needs.
