Techno-Economic Analysis of an Off-Grid Solar PV System for Rural Electrification in La Virginia, Ecuador

This chapter proposes a technically and economically viable alternative to reduce the current energy shortage experienced by residents of the “La Virginia” community in Quevedo, Ecuador. The goal is to design an off-grid photovoltaic solar energy system to fully supply electricity to all homes in the sector. First, an analysis of solar radiation data for the area was conducted using PVsyst software and meteorological databases. Second, load demand calculations were performed based on estimated electricity usage for typical rural households. Then, system sizing and design were carried out for two configurations using PVsyst: (a) a centralized system to supply all homes and (b) individual systems for each home. Furthermore, a techno-economic feasibility assessment was conducted for both designs, including system specifications, energy production estimates, cost analysis for equipment, installation, maintenance, and financial metrics like net present value, internal rate of return, and payback period. Finally, comparison of the two design options was performed to determine the most suitable solution for the community’s needs and resources. The proposed system aims to provide a clean, sustainable energy solution to improve quality of life in this off-grid rural area by allowing access to reliable electricity for basic needs and development.
