This chapter investigates the role and evolution of Wide-Area Monitoring Systems (WAMS) in the San Andrés Island electrical system, aiming to modernize it for the upcoming energy transition. It highlights how WAMS can enhance system reliability and stability, facilitate renewable energy integration, and automate control processes. The methodology involves a detailed analysis of implementation requirements, associated benefits, and costs, along with a case study of topological changes to identify the most suitable application for initiating the energy transition, with monitoring identified as a priority. The study finds that implementing WAMS significantly improves system resilience and efficiency. Performance analysis of monitoring applications within the topological change context underscores its critical role in addressing current and future challenges. This approach offers a comprehensive understanding of WAMS’s capability to modernize the electrical system of San Andrés Island.
