Public Transport Use and Challenges Faced by Immigrants, Refuges, and Roma Populations
摘要
Migration is a complex global phenomenon influenced by factors such as conflicts, economic crises, and climate change. This study focuses on the challenges faced by immigrant, refugee, and Roma (gypsy) populations in Western Greece when utilizing public transport. Western Greece is marked by increased migration due to agricultural and rural employment opportunities. Data were collected through collaboration with the Regional Asylum Office of Western Greece and accommodation facilities, involving the distribution of questionnaires to these specific groups. Initial findings reveal that 81% of respondents depend on public transportation for daily commutes with 60% using it on a weekly basis, even though the majority owns a private vehicle. Bus services are the preferred mode for both urban and interurban travel. A comparison between bus and train passengers shows differences in income levels and exposure to legal and ticket inspections. Challenges faced by these communities include dissatisfaction with ticket pricing and public transport reliability. Lastly, behavioral issues and discrimination also significantly affect passenger experiences.
