This chapter provides an introduction to solar ponds. A solar pond acts as both a solar collector and as a means of storing solar energy in the form of heat. In the present chapter, the basic principles of the operation of salinity gradient solar ponds are discussed and this is followed by an overview of the various applications of solar ponds. These applications include space heating, electricity generation, desalination and industrial heating. The chapter ends with a review of some of the solar ponds that have been constructed worldwide.
