This chapter critically examines the evolving role of Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) in Community-Based Inclusive Development (CBID). Drawing on the personal insights of lifelong disability advocates, it underscores OPDs’ shift from peripheral participants to central contributors. Highlighting OPDs as catalysts, the chapter explores how they foster inclusive socio-economic growth, reshape cultural perceptions of disability, and advocate cross-disability rights within communities. Despite these transformative roles, OPDs face significant challenges. They often confront resource constraints, systemic barriers, and paternalistic local policymaking that undermine meaningful participation. Further, alignment between national agendas and local realities can be difficult, emphasizing the necessity for robust vertical networking. The chapter also discusses the invaluable contributions of smaller and informal OPDs, particularly in rural settings, whose work remains under-recognized and underfunded. To address these hurdles, the chapter advocates strengthening alliances, enhancing OPD capacity-building, and developing research agendas that capture the lived experiences and community-based realities of OPDs. Ultimately, it contends that sustained support for both formal and informal OPDs is crucial for local ownership of CBID initiatives, leading to resilient, inclusive communities where persons with disabilities drive and shape their own development.
