The hippocampus, a key structure found in the inner part of the temporal lobe near the lateral ventricle, plays a crucial role in storing memories, acquiring new knowledge, navigating space, and managing emotions. It comprises several components: the hippocampus, the dentate gyrus (DG), the cornu ammonis (CA) areas, and the subiculum. The hippocampus, also known as CA, is divided into CA1, CA2, CA3, and CA4 areas based on cell structure changes. There are many afferent and efferent pathways through which stimuli come and go to the hippocampus. Sensory signals originating from the entorhinal cortex primarily reach the hippocampus via perforant pathways, mossy fibers, and Schaffer collateral fibers. The hippocampus also receives signals from the parahippocampal gyrus cortex and transmits these signals to the mammillary body, septal area, and hypothalamic nuclei via the fornix. The hippocampus gets its blood supply from branches of the posterior cerebral and anterior choroidal arteries. Blood drains through the superficial hippocampal veins, which gather from the sulcal and subependymal veins. These veins form two arches that drain into the basal vein: one through the inferior ventricular vein in the front and the other through the medial atrial vein in the back.
