Mental health and substance misuse often take over many domains of patients’ lives. Interdisciplinary teams within medically managed care are designed to address these aspects of holistic health care. However, to ensure best practice, additional training for members of these teams may be recommended or required after a practitioner has begun working in clinical practice. This chapter will build a theoretical and practical scaffolding for the practitioner to incorporate the skills needed once they are working in an array of clinical settings. The Fourth Edition of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Treatment Criteria for Addictive, Substance-Related, and Co-Occurring Conditions, will be incorporated throughout to provide a nationally accepted standard for this framework (ASAM, 2023). The importance of access to comprehensive national resources in connection with knowledge of state and local system referral sources is also essential for a practitioner throughout their career. This chapter will help initiate the development of these resources for medical practitioners and interdisciplinary teams specific to their practice and population. Case examples will highlight the process of addressing severity in both mental health and substance abuse to provide a framework for incorporating the unique skill set that may be most effective for everyone.
