The practice of medicine is truly an art, a healing culture. For learners to be effective and high-quality clinicians, they must learn via apprenticeship, collaborative learning, and use patient centered approach models which may include and identify social determinants of health, trauma informed care, and adverse childhood experiences. The passion must be ignited throughout the learning environment and multiple tools and approaches be utilized so learners are equipped for patients with all forms of challenges. There is an imperative need to address educational gaps in mental health and substance use disorders identifying systemic stigma, bias, and the impact on health systems including cost, quality, and access. National organizations have updated guides and recommendations that identify the urgent call to action to care for patients with mental health and substance use disorders which will be reviewed. In this chapter, the authors will also share their personal stories revealing their experiences that have impacted and influenced their career as educators and physicians.
