The Role of Leisure and Recreation in Recovery from Addictive Disorders
摘要
Leisure and recreation may not be the first thing medical professionals think about when considering treatment for an individual struggling with an addictive disorder. However, the conceptualization of addiction as a disease of leisure (Faulkner, Therapeutic recreation protocol for treatment of substance addictions. Venture Publishing, 1991) and SAMHSAs focus on holistic pathways out of addiction, creates a space wherein leisure and recreation can be considered important tools in the recovering person’s recovery tool kit. This chapter will highlight addiction’s complex interaction with leisure and recreation along with the impact addiction and recovery have on an individual’s leisure lifestyle. Readers will be introduced to the Phases and Outcomes of Leisure in Addiction and Recovery (POLAR) model as a means of exploring changing leisure patterns during addiction and recovery. Through the POLAR model this chapter considers how various treatment and community stakeholders can play an important role in building recovery capital and supports through leisure and recreation programming. Areas for future advocacy regarding leisure in recovery are considered.
