This chapter provides an overview of clinical supervision and the role that clinical supervision plays in the field of behavioral health and addiction. Clinical supervision is an important supplement to clinical practice that often leads to better patient outcomes, increased job satisfaction, as well as provider retention. Central to effective supervision is the establishment of a trusting, supportive relationship between supervisor and supervisee. There are a variety of models and methods that allow us to conceptualize supervision and these will be explored. It is imperative that access to supervision needs to be increased and prioritized. This chapter will explore ways to increase the effectiveness of supervision and overcome barriers to providing effective supervision. It will also explore ethical dilemmas that may best be processed in supervision as well as the role of telehealth in the provision of clinical services as well as supervision.
