This chapter explores the current role of peers in addiction and behavioral health treatment. As such the author explores a peer model, limitations in the peer model, current standards and competencies, workforce trends that cause challenges, innovations in care, and who benefits from peers. Throughout the chapter reflections, classroom discussions, and cases are used to explore the role of peers in services and how future workers can impact change. As peers increasingly assert their presence and strive to validate their roles and gain equity, it’s crucial to acknowledge that creating equitable systems that cause no harm is impossible without placing the service recipients at the heart of both the creation process and the work itself.
