Comprehensive Care for People with Behavioral Addictions and Co-occurring Disorders
摘要
This chapter discusses how to apply a collaborative approach to treat individuals diagnosed with co-occurring disorders (COD) and behavioral addictions (BA). The chapter presents current conceptual definitions and criteria of BA and COD, including substance use disorders (SUD), as per the American Psychiatric Association. The current classification status of BA within the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5-TR) and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) will be addressed. Research suggests exclusion of multiple BA which is hindering care, including provider education, service of patients and future research. Evidence-based practices (EBP) are presented as from abstinence and harm reduction philosophies; grounded primarily in the brain disease model of addiction, the biopsychosocial-spiritual (BPS) model allowing for inclusion of a culturally sensitive approach to treatment The innovative goal of this chapter is to bring attention to the need for providers to be able to identify behavioral addiction both as a singular presenting issue, and in coincidence with its comorbidities to increase the likelihood of providing comprehensive care.
